Salvador Sales received the degree in telecommunications engineering in 1992 and the Ph.D. degree in optical communications both from the Universiatt Politecnica de Valencia (UPVLC), Valencia, Spain, in 1995. He is currently a Professor of Optical Communications in the Departamento de Comunicaciones and collaborates with ITEAM, both at UPVLC. From 2004 to 2012, he was the Coordinator of Ph.D. Telecomunication students in UPVLC and he is still participating in the Doctoral Commission of UPVLC. He is the head of the fibre devices research line in the Photonics Research Group.
His research interests include the fields of all-optical signal processing, microwave photonics, and fibre sensors. Since 2000, he has been leading several European Union and national research projects in the field of optical communications. He has published more than 300 papers in technical journals and conference proceedings, including more than 10 invited in major international conferences, holds 7 patents, and he has cofounded the spin-off company CalSens SL in 2013. He was a Member of the Technical Programme Committees for several international conferences, including the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) (2008–2014) and he has been the Technical Programme Committee Chair at the IEEE International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (2009) and ECOC (2015). He received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award from the Spanish Telecommunication Society in 1996.
