Postdoc position for ERC Consolidator Grant InnoSpace

Revolutionizing fiber-wireless communications through space-division multiplexed photonics

 

The ITEAM Research Institute (Universitat Politcnica de Valncia, Spain) offesr 1 Postdoctoral position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic scientist/engineer, with a Doctorate in Photonics and background on optical fiber communications. The successful candidate will be associated to the Photonics Research Labs, led by Prof. Jos Capmany.

 

The contract is offered for up to 4 and a half years within the framework of the European ERC Consolidator Grant InnoSpace granted to Ivana Gasulla under the title Revolutionizing fiber-wireless communications through space-division multiplexed photonics. The idea of the project InnoSpace is to develop what we call distributed signal processing, where simultaneously to radiofrequency distribution, the same optical fiber will implement a variety of broadband functionalities that will be especially demanded in future 5G smart radiating systems. This approach requires working on a new portfolio of advanced optical fibers exploiting space-division multiplexing techniques, including both multicore fibers and few-mode fibers.

 

The work of the candidate, together with the rest of the research team, will imply, in first place, to work on new design algorithms and theoretical analysis using specific numerical software and Matlab. Then, he/she will contribute to the fabrication, monitoring and characterization of the proposed optical fibers and devices, including their final application to a set of representative Microwave Photonics applications that are required in fiber-wireless communications. Besides, he/she will contribute to the process of producing technical reports of the project and to the active searching of new funding opportunities.

 

Benefits

The contract is offered for a total of up to 4 and a half years after a test period of 4 months. The contract may be renewable after this period with the funds from other projects/grants.







Skills/Qualifications

The candidate should have a Telecommunications/Electrical Engineering Degree (or Physicist) with a Doctorate in Photonics and deep background on optical fiber communications (especially preferred in the field of space-division multiplexing). He/she must hold a good track record of scientific publications and experience in international research projects.

Its three specific objectives are: (1) The architecture design and optimization of a technology agnostic universal MWP programmable signal processor, (2) The chip mask design, fabrication and testing of the processor and (3) The experimental demonstration and validation of the processor.

 

Job Description

 

Under the supervision of the Project Leader, a Permanent Staff Researcher and a Postdoctoral Researcher, the PhD Student will focus his/her work mainly on the chip mask design processes of the optical core and the universal processor, its fabrication, packaging, measurement and validation.

Postdoc/Project Leader in Photonics-5G project

 

The  Photonics Research Labs of the iTEAM Institute are offering a Postdoctoral position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic scientist/engineer, with a background on optical communications, integration systems and integrated photonics, who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment.

The offered position is in the framework of the recent approved RIA project BlueSpace, Building on the Use of Spatial Multiplexing 5G Networks Infrastructures and Showcasing Advanced technologies and Networking Capabilties of the H2020 program and, more specifically, deals with design and fabrication of the Fronthaul End Points of a 5G network based that takes advantage of the Optical Spatial Multiplexing techniques. 

Particularly, s/he will be in charge of leading the execution of the project, tracking the asset generation and the completion of objectives and milestones according to the plan. S/he will also do the interfacing the partners of the consortium and the evaluators in the task related with the hardware design of the End Points.

The contract is offered for a total of up to 3 years (the duration of the project), after a test period of six months. The contract can be renewable after the 3 years with the funds from other projects/grants.
