Narcís Cardona, director of the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM), was interviewed on the program “Nos interesa conocer” directed by Vicente Climent of 8 Mediterráneo, where he shared the institute’s impressive achievements and future vision in its 20 years of existence.
Growth and Constant Expansion
Cardona highlighted how, over two decades, iTEAM has maintained constant growth, expanding its objectives and creating a promising future. Research at iTEAM covers all aspects of communication, from signals and cables to waves and transmissions that facilitate communication both at home and outside.
The director emphasized the need to evolve telecommunications networks to cope with the growing number of users and the demand for higher speed and quality in information transmission. He compared saturated networks to roads with few lanes, where slowdowns and blockages affect phones and computers. iTEAM telecommunications engineers work to adequately size these invisible “roads,” thus improving the quality and efficiency of communication.
For the past four years, iTEAM has been at the forefront of 6G research, focusing on developing a network that consumes less energy, is less complex, and more efficient. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in this advancement, enabling more autonomous and efficient networks, as well as generating additional traffic on the network. AI learns from the data provided by users, acting as an assistant trained by ourselves.
