Audio and Communications Signal Processing Laboratory

Description

The GTAC Lab is the experimental facility of the Audio and Communications Signal Processing Group (GTAC) at the iTEAM Research Institute – Universitat Politècnica de València. The lab focuses on the digital signal processing of audio and wireless communication signals, with strong emphasis on practical experimentation using high-quality professional equipment.

Main services and activities

  • Multi-channel digital recording and playback of audio signals

  • Post-processing and analysis of interior noise (vehicles, enclosed spaces)

  • Performance evaluation of Active Noise Control (ANC) systems

  • Environmental noise analysis and reduction strategies

  • Sound quality assessment through jury testing, using in-house developed software

  • Development of acoustic human–machine interfaces

  • Evaluation of signal processing algorithms on multi-core and many-core (GP-GPU) platforms

Facilities and equipment
The laboratory includes a 40 m² acoustically treated room equipped with:

  • Speaker arrays with up to 96 elements

  • 32-channel microphone acquisition systems

  • Head and torso simulator (B&K)

  • 3D imaging system and additional sensors

  • High-precision instruments (e.g. Brüel & Kjær sound level meter)

  • GPU-based high-performance computing infrastructure for real-time signal processing

Available resources
The lab provides access to more than 34,000 measured impulse responses in different experimental setups. These are available for research, education, and acoustic model validation.

Circular loudspeaker array in an acoustically treated room, used for immersive sound field reproduction and experimental measurements in spatial audio.

Multichannel setup in the GTAC Lab acoustic room, featuring 96 loudspeakers arranged on three sides and a 32-channel acquisition system. Designed for experiments on active noise control, spatial perception, and sound quality.
