Telecommunications are a fundamental part of the infrastructure that supports our society. Their impact ranges from personal connectivity to the management of essential services, and in times of crisis, such as the recent outage on April 28, their strategic and social value becomes even more evident.

At iTEAM, as a leading center for research, development, and training in telecommunication technologies, we are committed to scientific and technological progress not only through innovation and research, but also by educating the professionals who will shape the future.
Today, we want to highlight the vital work of engineers who ensure a connected society. Investing in telecommunications means investing in security, in the economy, and ultimately, in society.

📣iTEAM's Telepresence Takes Center Stage at the

📣iTEAM's Telepresence Takes Center Stage at the Fira dels Invents UPV 2025!

Last Friday, the edition of the Fira dels Invents UPV was held, showcasing the latest advances and research from the @instaupv. The event brought together prototypes and models developed by various UPV departments, institutes, and laboratories, as well as start-ups connected to the university.
The youngest attendees were captivated by the technology and immersive worlds presented by the iTEAM Research Institute's Mobile Communications Group, who offered a tour of the Immersive Communications Laboratory.

🥽Not only were visitors able to explore the lab's facilities and interact with the dancing robot dog, they also had the chance to talk with a 3D hologram of researchers located inside the lab. This hologram is captured in real time using the Volumetric Capture Set, generating a projection within a 3D environment and creating the sensation of being in the same space as the person navigating it through Virtual Reality goggles.
Additionally, the more adventurous visitors tested a demonstration of what haptic technology can bring to immersive environments. Inside a replica—a Digital Twin—of the UPV velodrome, participants were able to walk through the environment using VR goggles along with a haptic vest and gloves, allowing them to feel different obstacles and weather conditions encountered along the way. Without a doubt, it was a unique and groundbreaking experience for most of the fair’s visitors.

🤝🏻These demonstrations of telepresence and Mixed Reality experiences were made possible thanks to the UNICO I+D and IMAGINE-B5G projects, both funded by the European Union Recovery Fund – NextGenerationEU.

➡️ This development marks a significant step toward the creation of underwater sensors capable of identifying the three-dimensional direction of acoustic sources, with potential applications in maritime surveillance, marine wildlife tracking, and underwater communications.

📢 Narcís Cardona Will Participate in the Eighth Edition of the @5gforum in Seville!

The 5G FORUM is a well-established event and one of the most important in Spain and Europe focused on 5G technology. Looking ahead to its 2025 edition, digital cybersecurity will be one of the new frontiers to explore, though it won’t be the only topic addressed. Among others, 6G technology will become one of the main themes of this forum.

➡️ Narcís Cardona will present his vision, Director of the 6G Joint Innovation Centre at the iTEAM Research Institute of the @instaupv and Vice President of the one6G Association. He states that “one of the central topics in current debates is the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 6G.”

📍The Cartuja Auditorium will host the three in-person sessions of the eighth edition on Monday, May 12; Tuesday, May 13; and Wednesday, May 14. The event will conclude with a virtual format on Thursday, May 15, and Friday, May 16.

📢 Three UPV Schools Led by iTEAM Researchers 👏

iTEAM Research Institute at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is strengthening its presence in the leadership of three of its schools with the recent appointment of three of its researchers.

🔹 Vicenç Almenar, New Director of the Gandia Campus
Vicenç Almenar, a researcher in the Digital Systems Integration Group (GISED) at iTEAM, has been appointed Director of the Gandia Campus. A professor at this campus since its inception in 1993, Almenar has held various leadership roles, including Deputy Director of the Department of Communications, Head of Studies for the campus, Deputy Director of Research, and Coordinator of the Doctorate in Telecommunications. His experience and deep understanding of the academic environment will be key to driving new initiatives on campus.

🔹 Pau Bernabeu, Reappointed as Director of EPSA
Pau Bernabéu, a member of the Signal Processing Group (GTS) at iTEAM, will continue for another six years as Director of the Escuela Politècnica Superior d’Alcoi (EPSA). Bernabéu has played key roles within the institution, such as Academic Director of the Telematics Engineering degree for two years, as well as Deputy Director and Director of the Alcoi Campus since 2021. His reappointment as head of EPSA reflects recognition of his work and leadership within the institution.

🔹 Hector Esteban Gonzalez, New Director of ETSIT
Héctor Esteban, a member of the Microwave Applications Group (GAM) at iTEAM, has been re-elected Director of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Telecomunicación (ETSIT). His election strengthens iTEAM’s relevance within the academic structure of UPV and promises a period of consolidation and progress in research and education in the field of telecommunications.

The Digital Systems Integration Group (GISED) specializes in the design of algorithms and hardware architectures for digital communication systems and digital signal processing (DSP), leveraging FPGA technology. The team consists of 8 researchers dedicated to developing innovative and high-performance solutions. Its key research areas include:
🔹 Advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms and architectures.
🔹OFDM-based systems for optical and wireless communications.
🔹Algorithms and architectures for software-defined radio implementation on FPGA.
🔹Ultrasonic signal processing on FPGA.
🔹Design of high-performance arithmetic operators and DSP for FPGA.

🔍 Its mission is to drive innovation in telecommunications through cutting-edge digital technologies.

🔹Aurora Sat (2008): Now part of the Dassault Systèmes industrial group, it commercializes high-frequency component design software (FEST3D), developed at iTEAM in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).
🔹VLC Photonics (2011): Acquired by the Japanese multinational Hitachi High-Tech, it provides design services for photonic devices and their integration into chips.
🔹Calsens (2013): Offers process and structure monitoring services, safety evaluation consulting, and decision-making support to ensure proper operation based on fiber optic sensors.
🔹iPronics (2019): Designs, develops, and manufactures generic hardware architectures capable of implementing multiple functions through the programming of parameters in integrated photonic chips.
🔹Fivecomm (2019): Develops applications, systems, and industrial 5G devices.
🔹Hybpic (2025): A spin-off focused on hybridizing different technologies in integrated photonic circuits.

🏢 UPV hosts the 3rd Training School and PhD Course on Future Communications of the TOAST Project 🌐

@instaupv hosted the 3rd Training School of the European project TOAST (Touch-enable Tactile Internet Training Network and Open Source Testbed), a doctoral network funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme.

📢 The Training School has been organized by the UPV team led by Professor David Gomez-Barquero, member of the Mobile Communications Group (MCG) at iTEAM Research Institute and principal investigator of the project.

➡️ Throughout the week, the doctoral candidates have received advanced training in technical topics such as 5G/B5G Wireless Communications for Tactile Internet services, and Deep Learning for Visual and Time Series Analysis, as well as transferable skills on Entrepreneurship, Research & Communication, delivered by leading international experts.
The course offered intensive training on advanced networking, reinforcement learning, and performance evaluation of mobile networks, combining theoretical foundations with practical sessions to address the technological challenges of future communication systems.

The TOAST project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (HORIZON-MSCA-2022-DN-01) under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101073465.

📢 Innoagents Network Meeting in València!
iTEAM took part in the first meeting of the Innoagents Network, organized by IVACE+i at the Palacio de las Comunicaciones in València. Representing our institute were Alicia Abad, Innovation Agent, along with Elena Boronat and Francisco Marqués from the Scientific Unit for Business Innovation (UCIE).
The event brought together technical experts from universities, technology and research centers, business associations, and industrial areas across the Valencian Community. Key outcomes were shared, success stories discussed, and new innovation challenges identified; all with the aim of strengthening collaboration between science and industry.
Initiatives like this are essential to reinforce the connection between research and business, facilitate technology transfer, and promote sustainable, collaborative innovation.

Last weekend, the Open Innovation Circuit was successfully held at the @parquecientificocpi of the @instaupv, where students and families had the opportunity to tour the different iTEAM laboratories. During the event, they visited three of the iTEAM labs:

🔹 Industrial Photonics Laboratory: As part of the Smartmooring, INNOFIBER, and MILESTONE projects, the Optical Fiber Sensors Group at Photonics Research Labs (PRL) showcased their latest breakthroughs in cutting-edge technologies such as optical sensors, femtosecond laser microfabrication, integration into composite materials.
🔹 Immersive Communications Laboratory: Introduction to the lab and demonstrations of holography, telepresence, Extended Reality, and autonomous robots.

🔹 Soundcool: Interactive and immersive technologies for education and cognitive stimulation.

📣iTEAM of the @instaupv, @telefonica and Brains

📣iTEAM of the @instaupv, @telefonica and Brainstorm Multimedia have carried out a groundbreaking technological pilot that enables telepresence through real-time communication using three-dimensional holograms. This trial took place at La Cabina, the Innovation and Talent Hub located at Telefónica’s headquarters in Distrito T, as part of collaborative activities between the companies aimed at enabling impactful communication. It represents a significant step forward in the application of immersive technologies and remote communications.

The pilot showcased an interview in which Guillermo Bataller, Head of Transformation and Innovation Projects at Telefónica, appeared holographically in a specially equipped TV space at Espacio Movistar using Brainstorm’s production system. From that studio, an interviewer was able to hold a smooth conversation with the 3D hologram of Guillermo Bataller, who was actually located at the volumetric capture set in LaCabina, which features an advanced volumetric video streaming system. Attendees at the studio could see and hear both participants as if they were in the same space.

➡️Using these advanced immersive communication technologies, the pilot demonstrated how holograms can become a viable means of effective remote communication in future scenarios.

🏆iTEAM’s PRL and iPronics wins prestigious Frontiers of Science Award for the paper “Programmable Photonic Circuit” at Nature.

A paper by the Photonics Research Labs (PRL) at iTEAM, in collaboration with the spin-off iPronics, has been honored with the prestigious Frontiers of Science award, valued at $25,000.

This award recognizes exceptional scientific contributions from the past decade, emphasizing research that demonstrates excellence, originality, and significant impact in its field.

The awarded article, “Programmable Photonic Circuit,"was authored by an esteemed group of researchers: Wim Bogaerts (Ghent University), Daniel Pérez López (iPronics), José Capmany (UPV, iTEAM), David A. B. Miller (Stanford), Joyce Poon (University of Toronto), Dirk Englund (MIT), Francesco Morichetti (Polytechnic University of Milan), and Andrea Melloni (Polytechnic University of Milan).

📢 El grupo de Comunicaciones Móviles del iTEAM de la @instaupv ha desarrollado junto a @orange_es un sistema de conducción remota inversiva de tecnología 5G.

“Gracias a la tecnología 5G, la conducción remota se realiza con mínima latencia, lo que garantiza una conexión estable y segura entre el usuario y el robot, aunque se encuentren en ubicaciones separadas”, destaca David Gomez-Barquero-Barquero, subdirector de Investigación del iTEAM.

🌍 The 4th edition of @v5g__valencia comes to an end after two days of inspiration, knowledge, and collaboration on the future of 5G, 6G, and digital transformation.

Organized by the Mobile Communications Group (MCG) of iTEAM at @instaupv, the event brought together 200+ participants, including industry experts, researchers, and leading companies.

Through discussions and workshops, participants explored the challenges of 6G, the evolution of 5G, and the role of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) in the digital future.

🌐 iTEAM organizó la jornada “Fusión Nuclear. Retos Tecnológicos y Oportunidades para la Industria Española”, en colaboración con @parquecientificocpi.

El pasado 25 de marzo, iTEAM celebró la jornada “Fusión Nuclear: Retos Tecnológicos y Oportunidad para la Industria Española”, en colaboración con UPV Innovación, la Oficina de Transferencia de Conocimiento de la Universitat Politècnica de València UPV.
El objetivo del evento fue analizar las oportunidades y desafíos del sector de la fusión nuclear, una tecnología con un enorme potencial para el futuro de la energía limpia y sostenible. El evento contó con la participación de expertos del Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT), el proyecto @ifmif_dones -DONES y el Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación @cdti_innovacion , entre otras entidades clave en el ámbito de la fusión nuclear.

➡️ El evento contó con 68 inscritos, quienes pudieron conocer de primera mano el contexto actual de la fusión nuclear en los ámbitos nacional, europeo e internacional, así como los principales actores que lideran el desarrollo de esta tecnología.

Tomorrow, March 26th, the immersive laboratory team at iTEAM Research Institute will conduct a knowledge transmission experiment using holographic booths. During each 90-minute session, there will be multiple rounds of approximately 3 people on a first-come, first-served basis. Each round will last around 15 minutes.

La Unidad de Innovación del Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) de la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) se constituye como el grupo más nuevo del Instituto. La Unidad de Innovación fue creada en 2023 gracias al apoyo de Instituto Valenciano de Competitividad e Innovación IVACE +i (Generalitat Valenciana) en la Línea 2 del Programa de Valorización y Transferencia de Resultados de Investigación a las Empresas, Potenciación de Unidades Científicas de Desarrollo de Tecnologías y Difusión del Conocimiento hacia la Empresa y con la integración en la misma del Agente de Innovación, también apoyado por IVACE+i, a través del Programa de Promoción del Talento en su Línea 1.

La Unidad de Innovación está compuesta por cinco miembros clave que dan soporte a: ▪ Comunicación. ▪ Innovación. ▪ Patentes. ▪ Investigación.

La Unidad de Innovación se posiciona como un puente estratégico entre la investigación científica y el tejido empresarial y representa una oportunidad única para trasladar los avances en las tecnologías de comunicación al sector productivo de la Comunidad Valenciana.

Dichas tecnologías se perfilan como herramientas habilitadoras fundamentales para promover la modernización y la competitividad empresarial, contribuyendo de manera decisiva al desarrollo económico y social de la región.
