I have been working in the area of photonics, fiber sensors and optical communications for more than 25 years, since 1993. I am a researcher at the Photonics Research Labs of the iTEAM Research Institute, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and I am in charge of the fibre devices and fibre sensor research line. I have been: the Vice-Dean of the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandía, Campus Gandía, Universitat Politécnica de València, (1997-98), Deputy Director of the Departamento de Comunicaciones, Universitat Politècnica de València, (2004-08), and the Coordinator of the Postgrado studies in Telecommunications (2004-2011) which is one the programs with the higher indexes of quality and number of students in the Universitat Politècnica de València.
My main research lines have been: Microwave Photonics, Photonic Components, Slow Light Devices, Fibre Sensors and Optical networks. I have over 140 publications listed in the SCI-JCR (Nature Group, IEEE, OSA, IEE, APS), and over 180 International Conference publications (ECOC, OFC, OFS, EWOFS, CLEO, etc.), 3 Chapters in international research books as well as 11 Patents. I have taken part in 62 research projects of which in 21 I have been the principal researcher (PR) including 6 funded by the European Union, 2 by the European Space Agency, 4 by the Spanish government, 3 by the Valencian regional government and 6 by private companies.
Overall, I have been responsible for the rising of an overall turnover of more than 3 million € in photonic instrumentation and infrastructure for ITEAM-UPV Laboratories in Optical Communications. I would like to highlight that I have published in the most prestigious journals of my research field Nature Photonics (1), Nature Communications (1), Scientific Reports (2). I have realized three research stays at very high-quality research centres: Optoelectronics Research Center (Southampton, UK), Imec-Ghent University (Belgium) and DTU Fotonik (Denmark). The current number of citations for my publications is 5826, which leads to an h-index of 36, (Source: Google Scholar). Since 2015 the number of citations for my publications is 3256, which leads to an h-index of 25 (only taking into account since 2015). The index i10 of my publications is 97 and this index i10, referred only to the last five years is 59.
I was co-founder of the spin-off CalSens S.L. It has now three employees who have studied their degrees at the Universitat Politècnica de València. CalSens has signed contracts with ESA (European Space Agency), FGV (Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana) y Tecnalia, amongst others. I have been co-author of two patents that have been transferred to CalSens which is paying the royalties to the university every year.
I have been attending thesis committees around Europe, member of the technical committees of the most relevant international conferences in my field of expertise and I have collaborating in Commissions of Trust for European, National and Regional scientific programs.
